Chief Justice Martha Koome has confirmed the passing of Bernard Kipyegon Rugut, the Principal Magistrate at Molo Law Courts
In a heartfelt statement released on Tuesday, October 22, Koome praised Rugut for his diligence and professionalism during his judicial career. “On behalf of the Judiciary, and on my own behalf, I express our deepest condolences to his spouse, Hon. Purity Koskey Rugut of Kabarnet Law Courts, their children, and the entire family,” Koome stated.
Rugut began his judicial career on July 13, 2022. He served as a Resident Magistrate at Bondo Law Courts. Over the years, Rugut demonstrated unwavering dedication at various stations, including Ndhiwa and Kericho Courts. His commitment to justice remained steadfast throughout his tenure.

Koome highlighted that Rugut had served as Principal Magistrate at Molo Law Courts since May 2, 2023. “Throughout his career, Rugut exemplified diligence, fairness, and professionalism,” Koome noted.
A Judiciary in Grief
The Chief Justice emphasized that Rugut’s legacy will continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones as we mourn the loss of a dedicated judicial officer,” Koome said. She expressed hope that his soul finds eternal peace.
This announcement follows the recent passing of another respected magistrate. Just two days earlier, Koome confirmed the death of Zena Atetwe Rashid Jalenga, a Resident Magistrate at Milimani Commercial Court. Jalenga passed away on October 20, 2024, after a long illness.
Koome reflected on Jalenga’s commitment to justice, stating, “Hon. Rashid exhibited firm commitment to the cause of justice and the rule of law.” She extended her condolences to Jalenga’s family and friends, urging them to find strength during this challenging time.
