Judge Forced to Adjourn Virtual Court Session After Kenyans Chant Anti-Adani Slogans

Virtual court proceedings involving Adani Group Limited were abruptly interrupted on Thursday, October 17, as Kenyans stormed the online session demanding the Indian conglomerate’s exit from a controversial airport deal. The disruption led to the High Court being forced to adjourn the proceedings and reschedule it to a later date.

The uproar began when a group of vocal protestors managed to infiltrate the virtual courtroom. After gaining access to the session details, they disrupted the ongoing hearing by shouting, “Adani Must Go! JKIA is not for sale!” Their chants created chaos, prompting High Court Judge Mwamuye to intervene. Despite his attempts to call for order, the protestors’ persistence left the judge with no option but to suspend the hearing temporarily.

“I understand your protests, and I am unable to deliver this judgment now,” Judge Mwamuye remarked before adjourning the session for approximately 15 minutes. Following the disruption, the hearing was postponed until October 22, 2024.

Petition Against Adani Group and the Government

The case stems from a petition filed in September 2024 by prominent Kenyan activist Tony Gachoka and a group of lawyers. The petition challenges the government’s decision to lease the management of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to Adani Group Limited, a giant Indian multinational corporation. Gachoka in his filing argued that the deal compromises national interests and threatens Kenya’s sovereignty over a key public asset.

Before the protestors derailed the proceedings, the court had just begun delivering its ruling on the matter. The case has gained significant public interest, particularly due to concerns surrounding foreign control of crucial infrastructure.

The controversy surrounding the Adani Group’s involvement in JKIA has sparked widespread debate across the nation. Many Kenyans, including civil society groups and political leaders, have expressed concerns about the transparency of the deal. Critics argue that leasing such a vital asset to a foreign entity could have long-term economic and security implications for the country.
