In a heartwarming turn of events, Kenyans have rallied to raise Ksh 354,748 in just hours to support Wanyonyi, a needy boy from Bungoma who dropped out of school.
Wanyonyi’s Dream Deferred
Wanyonyi, a former student at Bungoma High School, dropped out during the second term of Form 3 due to financial constraints. The burden of school fees became overwhelming, forcing him to abandon his educational aspirations. Despite this setback, he took up casual construction work “mjengo,” to help support his family.
Wanyonyi’s situation however took a positive turn when Ash Jay, a teacher from his former school, discovered him working in his neighborhood. The teacher had been visiting when an elder pointed out Wanyonyi, identifying him as a dropout. The teacher was shocked and concerned, and approached Wanyonyi to confirm his status. After checking the school’s Zeraki system, she verified Wanyonyi’s exam history, realizing the potential he had lost.

Wanyonyi’s Academic Potential
According to the KCSE 2023 analysis from Bungoma High School, Wanyonyi’s classmates excelled academically, with eight students achieving A- and 198 boys joining various universities. This is a reflection of what Wanyonyi could have accomplished had he not dropped out of school.

The teacher then launched a viral call to action to help Wanyonyi. In her Facebook page, she urged followers to contribute small amounts, and tag other personalities who could help Wanyonyi’s situation. The plea reached Ndugu Nyoro, a prominent Facebook personality known for championing education for needy students through his initiative “Watoto Wasome Affecto.”

Nyoro quickly set up a paybill to collect donations for Wanyonyi’s education. Within hours, Kenyans contributed over Kes 300,000 to help fund his return to school.
Nyoro stated, “Wanyonyi is willing to start at Form 2 to refresh his mind and regain the momentum needed to reach university.”
A Life-Changing Moment
After the successful fundraising effort, Ndugu Nyoro invited Wanyonyi and his father to Nairobi to hand them over cheques needed to pay school fees and other necessities. “At 2 a.m., father and son were already in Nairobi, eager for this opportunity,” Nyoro shared.

Nyoro added, “They will travel back tonight (Wednesday) and arrive in Bungoma early in the morning to buy uniforms and school supplies. It feels like a fresh admission.”
Wanyonyi is set to return to Bungoma High School on Friday, fully prepared to embrace his education.
