CBK Rolls Out New Currency Series

CBK initially announced changes to Kenya’s currency on August 6, 2024. The release of the updated Ksh1,000 denomination marks the first step, with denominations of Ksh50, Ksh100, Ksh200, and Ksh500 set to follow.

“The release of KES50, KES100, KES200, and KES500 denominations is now in progress,” CBK confirmed in a recent statement.

The updated series will circulate alongside existing banknotes issued in 2019 and earlier, all of which remain legal tender.

Old Features Retained in the Updated Ksh1,000 Banknotes

Even though the new notes have enhanced security updates, CBK emphasized that the note retains most of its recognizable features like:

  • Watermark Security: When held to light, the watermark displays a lion’s head, the text “CBK,” and the note’s value.
  • UV Features: The golden band on the note reveals its value under ultraviolet light.
  • Enhanced Security Thread: A continuous line visible on both sides of the note changes color when viewed at an angle.

Why Are Notes Being Updated?

Updating currency is vital to maintaining trust in a nation’s financial system. These measures aim to deter counterfeiting and ensure the currency’s integrity in everyday transactions.
