President William Ruto has officially bid farewell to outgoing U.S. Ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman. Her departure comes after a transformative two-year tenure that strengthened Kenya-U.S. relations and elevated them to new heights.
During a farewell ceremony at State House, Nairobi, President Ruto lauded Ambassador Whitman for her dedication to fostering a closer bond between the two nations.
“Ambassador Whitman has tirelessly championed the Kenya-United States partnership,” President Ruto remarked. “Her efforts over the past two years have been invaluable. We are immensely grateful for her work.”
Ruto also talked of the long-standing partnership between Kenya and the U.S., highlighting shared values such as democracy and the rule of law. He noted the diplomatic milestone achieved when Kenya was designated a Major Non-NATO Ally by the U.S., a move that has solidified bilateral ties.
Meg Whitman’s Departure
Ambassador Meg Whitman who assumed her role in August 2022, recently announced her resignation. She cited personal reasons and the upcoming change in U.S. leadership as key factors for her decision.

“With a new administration on the horizon, it’s customary for ambassadors to submit their resignations,” Whitman explained. “For me, this is also a family decision. We have young grandchildren, and it’s time to return to the U.S. and settle down.”
Meg Whitman reassured Kenyans that her departure was not prompted by external pressure or criticism. Instead, it reflects a commitment to ensuring a smooth transition to a new administration.
