The president’s remarks appeared to target the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), who on Thursday criticized his administration for failing to deliver on key promises, including tackling corruption and addressing security concerns.
Catholic Bishops’ Criticism Sparks National Debate
On November 14, Catholic bishops expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s performance. They accused the administration of failing to address pressing issues such as:
- Delayed repayment of National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) debts to faith-based organizations.
- Inaction on reforming the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
- Escalating cases of abductions, femicide, and extrajudicial killings.
“Families are mourning children lost in the Gen Z demonstrations of June 2024. Who is behind these abductions and killings? The government must answer,” the bishops declared.
President Ruto Defends His Administration
In his response, President Ruto dismissed the bishops’ accusations as overly critical and counterproductive. He argued that addressing national challenges requires collaboration rather than finger-pointing.
“Criticism is welcome in public discourse, but we must all aim to provide solutions. Leaders, clergy, and citizens must contribute to building a country every Kenyan will be proud of,” he said.
The president also reassured the public of his commitment to addressing concerns raised by the clergy.
