The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) has strongly criticized President William Ruto’s administration for failing to address critical national issues.
Speaking in Nairobi, the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) has expressed concerns about corruption, over-taxation, unfulfilled promises, and human rights violations.
The bishops accused the government of ignoring its pledge to settle the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) debt owed to faith-based organizations. They revealed that efforts to engage the president on this matter had been fruitless.
The church leaders also condemned the hike in missionary work permits, stating that the increased costs undermine faith-based efforts to assist communities. “Despite reaching out to the president, no intervention has been made,” the bishops noted.
Electoral Body and Presidential Term Limit
The bishops criticized the President Ruto’s administration’s failure to constitute the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), a move they believe threatens Kenya’s democracy. They also warned against the proposed extension of the presidential term limit from five to seven years, suggesting that such changes could weaken democratic institutions.

In their address, the bishops further called out the government for alleged human rights violations, including suppression of free speech, abductions, and extra-judicial killings.
“Many families continue to grieve for their missing or murdered loved ones following the Gen Z demonstrations,” they said, questioning the lack of accountability for these atrocities.
The bishops also highlighted the alarming rise in cases targeting young girls and women, calling for swift government action to address the security crisis.
Bishops Demand Accountability and Fiscal Discipline
The church leaders urged the government to use collected revenue more effectively and implement austerity measures to prevent unnecessary spending. They insisted that consultations with stakeholders are crucial for addressing key issues like youth unemployment, taxation, and education reforms, including the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
“This culture of lies, unkept promises, and misplaced priorities is unacceptable,” the bishops declared.
The KCCB concluded their statement by urging the administration to embrace values like justice, humility, and selflessness in governance. “We thank God for holding our nation together despite ongoing challenges. We pray for leaders who can guide Kenya with integrity,” they said.
This criticism from the Catholic Church adds to mounting pressure on President Ruto’s government to address pressing concerns and deliver on its promises.
