Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua faces potential impeachment over alleged abuse of office and gross violations of the Constitution. With 291 Members of Parliament (MPs) supporting the motion, Gachagua stands to lose more than just his title. If the motion passes, Gachagua will forfeit hefty financial benefits and privileges associated with his office.
MPs Back Impeachment Motion
Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse initiated the motion to impeach Gachagua, citing 11 grounds for his removal. Among the accusations are multiple instances of constitutional violations over the past two years. A majority of lawmakers support the motion, with 291 MPs exceeding the required 117 to advance the impeachment process. Should the impeachment succeed, Gachagua could lose his lucrative salary, generous allowances, and multiple benefits.
Gachagua’s Salary Breakdown
If impeached, Gachagua stands to lose a significant salary package. Currently, the Deputy President earns a gross monthly salary of Sh1,227,188. This includes:

- Basic Salary: Sh736,313
- House Allowance: Sh300,000
- Commuter Allowance: Provided by the government
- Salary Market Adjustment: Sh190,875
The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), empowered by Article 230(4)(a) of the Constitution, oversees the pay structure for state officers. Gachagua’s loss of income will be a notable setback.
Medical and Other Benefits at Stake
Beyond his salary, Gachagua enjoys extensive medical coverage that could vanish with impeachment. The Deputy President’s medical benefits include:
- Inpatient Medical Cover: Sh10 million
- Outpatient Coverage: Sh300,000
- Maternity Cover: Sh150,000
- Dental and Optical Cover: Sh75,000 each
In addition, Gachagua’s family benefits from these provisions, including his spouse and up to four fully dependent children under the age of 25. This comprehensive medical insurance could disappear with his position.
Other High-End Perks Gachagua Could Lose

Gachagua’s potential impeachment would also strip him of future retirement benefits. Currently, the Deputy President is entitled to an 80% pension of his last salary while in office. This amounts to Sh589,050 per month. Additional retirement perks include:
