Kithure Kindiki has officially been appointed Deputy Leader of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, replacing former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The UDA National Executive Committee (NEC) confirmed Kindiki’s new role on November 11, marking an end to Gachagua’s tenure.
According to the NEC’s statement, the decision stemmed from constitutional requirements following Gachagua’s recent legal troubles and challenges in office. Citing articles 75 (3) and 45(7) of the Kenyan Constitution, the NEC declared Gachagua unable to perform his duties, effectively vacating his position.
Why Kindiki’s Transition to UDA Deputy Party Leader is Significant
Kithure Kindiki who became Deputy President of Kenya earlier in November, now steps into UDA’s second-highest position as the official Deputy Leader. This dual role gives Kindiki a strong influence in the party’s strategic direction. The NEC believes Kindiki’s leadership will bring stability and continuity in the UDA’s objectives.
In response to his appointment, Kindiki expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him. “I want to thank UDA for the swift changes to ensure smooth operations within the party. I am committed to working closely with each party member to advance our collective goals.” He said.

Rigathi Gachagua’s Next Steps After UDA Leadership Change
Rigathi Gachagua’s exit as Deputy Leader does not remove him entirely from the UDA. A source within the party clarified that Gachagua is free to remain an ordinary member, adding that the NEC’s decision only affects his leadership position. The source confirmed, “Gachagua has been replaced in leadership, but a decision on his expulsion hasn’t been made. He can choose to stay or leave as he wishes.”
Gachagua’s recent months have been challenging, facing investigations and defending himself in the National Assembly against several allegations. These accusations, which include misuse of office and illegal acquisition of assets, culminated in his Senate impeachment. Following the impeachment, Gachagua’s legal team pursued court appeals to reverse his removal, but the effort was unsuccessful. Despite this, Gachagua’s supporters argue that the decision to remove him from the UDA’s leadership might affect his future political influence.
This leadership shift within UDA comes at a crucial time for Kenyan politics, as the ruling UDA party prepares for 2027 general elections and aims to maintain its influence.
