Senate Stunned as DP Rigathi Gachagua Reportedly Falls Ill, Goes Missing During Impeachment Trial

Drama unfolded in the Senate on Thursday after embattled Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua suddenly went missing, just minutes before he was set to testify during his impeachment trial. The Senate session, which had resumed after a lunch break, was thrown into confusion as Gachagua’s legal team revealed that he had taken ill, moments before he was expected to take the stand.

Senior Counsel Paul Muite, representing the Deputy President, informed Senate Speaker Amason Kingi that his client had unexpectedly fallen ill during the break. “Honourable Speaker, we are waiting for the Deputy President, but I’ve been informed that he is unwell. I request a brief adjournment to establish his condition,” Muite stated.

The sudden turn of events came on a day when the Senators were expected to vote on 11 charges brought against Gachagua, with accusations ranging from abuse of office to misconduct. The impeachment trial, which has been marked by high political tension, saw both sides prepared for a crucial day of testimony, with Gachagua’s absence creating a significant stir in the chambers.

The Senate, filled with anticipation for Gachagua’s defense, was left in suspense as Muite and the legal team scrambled to locate their client. Calls for adjournment quickly followed, with several Senators, including Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, urging Speaker Kingi to suspend the proceedings until Gachagua’s whereabouts could be confirmed.

“We cannot proceed without the presence of the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who is central to these proceedings. I request that the Speaker adjourn the session until further notice,” Khalwale stated.

Despite efforts to locate him, Gachagua remained unreachable, leading to further speculation about his health and the impact of his absence on the ongoing trial. The situation has left the Senate on edge, with many awaiting further updates on the Deputy President’s condition and whether he will be able to continue his defense.

As the country watches closely, the sudden illness and disappearance of the Deputy President have only added to the drama surrounding his impeachment trial. The Senate’s decision on whether to proceed without him or allow more time for his recovery remains pending.

The trial, which could significantly shape Kenya’s political landscape, now faces uncertainty, with the next steps hinging on Gachagua’s ability to return to the chamber and defend himself against the charges.
