Morara Kebaso More Influential Than Kithure Kindiki, New Infotrak Report Reveals

A new survey by Infotrak has revealed surprising insights into the influence of key figures in Kenya, ranking activist Morara Kebaso as more influential than Deputy President-designate Kithure Kindiki. The report released on October 23, 2024, surveyed Kenyans on their views regarding this year’s heroes and the most influential national figures. The results highlight the rising influence of the youthful Gen Zs, along with unexpected rankings that place political and non-political figures in the spotlight.

Gen Zs Ranked as National Heroes

According to the Infotrak survey, 23% of Kenyans consider Gen Zs as national heroes. This generation’s strong stance on social, political, and economic issues has resonated with the public. The findings suggest that their engagement in activism and youth-driven movements positions them at the forefront of Kenya’s future.

Opposition chief Raila Odinga followed with an 18% preference, marking him as a hero in the eyes of many Kenyans. His influence is especially strong in Nyanza (30%), where his legacy continues to shape political discussions. Notably, athlete Faith Kipyegon secured third place with 11% ranking, recognized for her impressive achievements in athletics.

Morara Kebaso vs. Kithure Kindiki

In a surprising turn, lawyer turned activist Morara Kebaso emerged as a more influential figure than Kithure Kindiki, the Deputy President-designate. The Infotrak survey ranked Kebaso with 4% influence, outpacing Kindiki, who garnered just 1%. Kebaso’s vocal advocacy for economic justice through exposing corruption in government has struck a chord with the Kenyan public.
This shift demonstrates how non-political figures like Kebaso are challenging the traditional power dynamics in Kenya.

Raila Odinga Remains Kenya’s Most Influential Person

Raila Odinga once again tops the list of Kenya’s most influential individuals, according to the Infotrak survey. He secured 26% of the votes, maintaining his long-standing dominance in the political arena. Odinga’s ability to mobilize large sections of the electorate, particularly in his home region of Nyanza (42%), Western (34%), and Coast (39%), make a statement on his powerful influence despite not holding office.

President William Ruto ranked second in terms of influence, with just 7% of respondents naming him as a key figure. His influence is particularly strong in Western Kenya and Central Kenya, two regions where political dynamics remain critical. However, the survey highlighted that Ruto’s public sway lags behind that of Raila and even activist figures like Morara Kebaso.

The Infotrak report also shed light on the ongoing political tensions between President William Ruto and his impeached Deputy, Rigathi Gachagua. Both leaders tied in the heroes’ category with an 8% ranking.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino who is a vocal MP known for his youth engagement, also tied with Gachagua and Ruto at 8%. This signals an increasing influence of younger leaders in Kenyan politics.
