Moi University is set to reopen after a three-month closure caused by a prolonged workers’ strike. The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and two other unions signed a return-to-work agreement on Saturday 30th November, ending the stalemate.
Sources allege that the government committed Sh500 million under the signed agreement, providing immediate relief to the university. Education CS Julius Ogamba and Higher Education PS Beatrice Inyangala witnessed the signing, signaling the government’s intent to address systemic challenges.

Key players in the deal included UASU Secretary General Constantine Wasonga, KUSU National Secretary James Mogaka, and representatives from KUDHEIHA. They negotiated to ensure that the university staff’s demands were addressed partially, though not fully met.
Workers Set to Resume Duties
The agreement means over 900 academic staff and 2,300 other workers will return to their duties. Speaking on the development, Wasonga acknowledged that the unions had compromised to ensure the university resumes operations.
“To all workers, let’s get back to work on Monday. Although we didn’t secure everything we wanted, progress has been made. Even the tail is meat,” Wasonga said.
Moi University Vice-Chancellor Isaac Kosgey assured stakeholders that learning would resume immediately. He emphasized efforts to recover lost time and promised plans for a December graduation ceremony for 6,000 students.
