Impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has made alarming revelations regarding two separate attempts to poison him, one in Kisumu and another in Nyeri.
Speaking to the press outside Karen Hospital on Sunday, Gachagua stated that his life had been targeted twice, with undercover agents allegedly attempting to poison his food in both instances. He also expressed deep concern over the withdrawal of his security detail by President William Ruto, a move that has left him feeling vulnerable.
“I want to tell Kenyans that I don’t feel safe. When we were in Kisumu, undercover agents entered my room and bugged it. One of them tried to poison my food, but we detected and escaped the scheme,” Gachagua told reporters.
“In Nyeri, another team from the National Intelligence Service (NIS) also attempted to poison my food. After these two failed attempts, the impeachment motion against me was initiated.”

The Deputy President revealed that these assassination attempts were part of a broader scheme to remove him from office, suggesting a political conspiracy against him. Gachagua emphasized that the attacks took place before the impeachment process was set into motion, raising concerns about the motive behind the attempts.
Gachagua Calls Out President Ruto
In his press briefing, Gachagua did not shy away from expressing his disappointment in President William Ruto, accusing him of being “vicious” for withdrawing his security while he was hospitalized. He lamented that despite his loyalty to Ruto during their presidential campaign, he now feels betrayed.
“It’s unfortunate that while I was in the hospital, my brother and friend, William Ruto, ordered the withdrawal of my security detail,” Gachagua said. “I no longer have any officers assigned to protect me. I never imagined Ruto could be that vicious, especially after I helped him become president.”
Gachagua explained that unlike other senior government officials such as Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula, he never required a memorandum of understanding with the President due to the trust he had placed in him. However, that trust has been shattered following recent events.
“I No Longer Have Security”
Gachagua’s security concerns have escalated after the sudden withdrawal of his bodyguards, leaving him unprotected. He held President Ruto accountable for his safety, stating that if any harm were to come to him or his family, Ruto should be held responsible.
“I want the people of Kenya to know today that as I go home, I have no security,” Gachagua said. “It is important that the public understands that if anything happens to me or my family, President Ruto must be held to account.”
These revelations come at a time when Kenya’s political landscape is increasingly fraught with power struggles and internal tensions. The strained relationship between President Ruto and Gachagua, once close allies, now threatens to destabilize the highest levels of government.
